  21. Sorry I havent been on in awhile, I got hit really bad by a Trojan
  22. Horse.... The darn thing blanked my screen on me and then selectively
  23. deleted every 200th cluster on my hard drive !  Needless to say I am
  24. quite upset and in a stir here.... I lost alot of things, but had recent
  25. backups... Just some things that I didnt catch on a regular basis that
  26. have to be taken care of... My apologies to you for not being on here in
  27. awhile, but I have kinda been debating about some things like "Is this
  28. all worth it?'   I thought about it real hard....  This is the third
  29. time in 6 months I have gotten hit with a trojan horse, what hurts more
  30. is that all three times it was a friend of mine that I was led to
  31. believe was a newcomer to computers and modeming, but little did I know,
  32. he was working in league with a user I booted off the system.  He is
  33. actually quite a knowledgeable programmer and uploaded the programs to
  34. me which I thought I could use, so stupid me, I didnt run chk4bomb on
  35. them cazuse I was such in a rush to use them, and look what happened !
  36. Well, on the lighter side, I know who it is, and have filed charges
  37. against him with the police and the local DA says the charges will
  38. stick, so I am not at all in a glump still.  All the damages I am
  39. seeking are damages for the time I spent repairing the hard drive .  Is
  40. there ever an end to this ?  Four other local boards have gotten hit by
  41. this gook also and 3 have gone down.... I am the last to stand here and
  42. I really dont feel like being the target of TH's !  Well, just wanted to
  43. let you know that  I am still alive and I hope to have my board back up
  44. and resume normal calling to other boards shortly.  Hey, hows the
  45. network mail thing coming ? I am really interested on that, but have
  46. been occupied getting my board back up... Let me know how it works...

  56. The names of the programs that were the Trojan Horses that I got on my
  57. system and other local boards were   ENVLOP21.ARC  a supposed label
  58. maker program quick and easy.  This file unarcs to about 3K and what
  59. it does is when you run it, it blanks your screen and your hard drive
  60. light goes on and the program selectively attacks clusters at equal
  61. intervals.  The person that wrote this program is 12 years old and his
  62. father is a computer professor at RIT here in Rochester.  We have
  63. contacted his parents several times but they seem unwilling to do
  64. anything about it and also think their child is an angel and dont think
  65. he would do anything like that.  THe other program was also a 3K large
  66. program unarced and was an Envelope adresser called  ENVELOPE.ARC  .
  67. This program goes for broke and tries to corrupt every file on your hard
  68. drive !!!!!  What this one does is blanks your screen and then flashes
  69. the screen several times while your hard drive light is on, and when you
  70. get through, you have jello coming out of your hard drive and when you
  71. go to do a Norton Disk Test, it shows multiple file corruptions and
  72. cluster errors.  Alias's of this "child" are Peter Traeg, Peter Norton,
  73. and Noah Rubins.  The alias of Peter Norton, he uses and he gets all the
  74. necessary info for registering from the back of a Norton Utilities box
  75. like address and phone number.  BEWARE OF THIS KID HE IS A MENACE !! His
  76. real name is Noam Mendleson from Rochester NY.  If anyone wants further
  77. info about him let me know, but also tagged on his list of hits was a
  78. local Genesis board for which Noam got a copy of the Genesis PC BBS
  79. software, tore apart a few of the internal programs like sysop utils and
  80. re-wrote them and then uploaded them to the Genesis board as a POWERFUL
  81. GENESIS UTILITY ! Well, the Sysop , with out checking, ran the utility
  82. and the screen blanked and renamed his user log complete with passowrds
  83. to another filename, and copied it into the download path and then the
  84. last part of the program did something with the userlog and gave every
  85. user SYSOP ACCESS !  This was all done without the Sysop knowing what
  86. was going on till he found out through a little light, which happened to
  87. be Noam logging on and trying to do things with his new Sysop access.
  88. Well, needless to say this caused quite a stir up here and everyone had
  89. to change their passwords.....
